When you choose our bed linen, you choose quality that lasts for years. But we also realise that, however long a product lasts, there always comes a moment when it needs to be replaced. What happens then? Do you throw it away, or can it be given a second life?
We believe that responsibility for a product does not end the moment it is delivered to your home. That is why we are actively committed to Extended Producer Responsibility for Textiles (Uitgebreide Producentenverantwoordelijkheid, UPV).
What exactly is the UPV?
You may have heard the term mentioned before. The UPV is a government initiative to reduce the enormous mountain of textile waste. The goal is ambitious: by 2030, at least 50% of all textiles placed on the market in the Netherlands must be recycled into new fibres.
As DOUXE, we take our responsibility within this system. We contribute financially and organisationally to a nationwide network for collection and recycling. In this way we make sure that the raw materials we use today are preserved for the future.
From worn out to valuable
We often think of an old duvet or a worn flat sheet as waste. But did you know that these are actually valuable raw materials? When you no longer use a DOUXE product, you can hand it in at local textile containers or collection points.
The process that follows is impressive:
-
Sorting: Textiles that are still in excellent condition are given a second life by reuse organisations.
-
Recycling: Is the textile really worn out? Then the transformation begins. The material is shredded into new fibres. These fibres are then processed into new yarns or put to good use as insulation material or filling.
Your role in the circle
You are the most important link in this process. By not throwing your textiles into the general waste, but finding your way to the textile container, you help us close the circle. In doing so, you save valuable raw materials, water and energy that would otherwise be needed to produce completely new textiles.
For us this is more than just complying with legislation; it is a promise. A promise to handle our materials with care and to protect your sleeping comfort of today for the generations of tomorrow.
Do you have questions about how best to hand in your DOUXE products, or are you curious about our other sustainability steps? Please let us know. We would be happy to talk with you about a more sustainable future.
