Hidden corners, staircases and marble hallways
When I walked into the Pulitzer Amsterdam for the first time, I felt a hint of nostalgia come over me. The style and atmosphere of this hotel is unlike any other. The hotel is filled with hidden corners, staircases and marble hallways where Dutch merchants entered their homes in the Golden Age. A great place for hide and seek, I tell you. For children or for those of us adults who just don't want to grow up.
When you think about how this hotel was founded, it is rather astonishing. It started with a visionary idea: 'Your neighbour's house is only for sale once'. And that is exactly what Mr Pulitzer did in the 60s, 25 of them to be exact. Together with KLM and Heineken he bought 25 canal houses in the most premium spot in Amsterdam. What is even more incredible about this set-up is that it is all connected by an adjoining garden between the houses on the Prinsengracht and the Keizersgracht. Such a stunt is impossible these days. Staying at the Pulitzer Amsterdam is not an average hotel stay. Situated by the Nine Streets, you truly experience what it is like to live in the cosy city of Amsterdam.
The hotel was beautifully renovated 3 years ago. Jacu Strauss was responsible for this distinctive interior design. I would describe the style as a modern twist on Dutch classic heritage. The oldest five-star hotel in Amsterdam feels more like a lively museum with award-winning, tasty cocktails, delicious lattes and poached eggs with avocado on toast. That's my kind of museum.
First-class service
That homely feel is embraced and delivered by the Pulitzer staff. Five-star service without airs and graces, but down-to-earth, personal Dutch hospitality. As you make your way through the hotel, it feels like home. The extra luxury of being served at the snap of your fingers is a nice bonus though.
